Third time lucky though, and soon after he was successful to put the home side 3-0 up. Nure slowly grew into the match, and after Staunton level matters with a penalty, we got out hands on the ball and applied good pressure, with great offloading getting us within shouting distance of the line before a knock on allowed Mary’s to clear.
However, an infringement at ruck-time gave Staunton a chance to level the scores – just wide into the breeze. An attempt at a cheeky dropout backfired for the home side though, and from the ensuing possession, the Mary’s left winger was sent to the bin for a spear tackle. Staunton made no mistake from the penalty to nudge us ahead at 6-3. The game became scrappy for a while after that, before Shane Donovan chased Kev O’Neill’s box kick, earning Terenure a turnover and penalty – 9-3 from Staunton’s boot. On the stroke of half time the hosts hit back with a penalty of their own to leave it 9-6 at the break.
The scoreline reflected a patchy first half, with the home side in particular guilty of letting sloppy handling spoil good chances – typical early season stuff. The Terenure pack had the upper hand in the set pieces, with Al Dunlop raiding the Mary’s lineout before going off with a finger injury. The Mary’s back line looked sharp – but key passes were going astray, and Nure’s defence gave them heart going into the second half with the wind at their backs. In an indication of the breeze, Staunton went for an ambitious drop goal as the second half started, with his attempt narrowly wide.
However, Mary’s struggled to get out of their 22, and good possession allowed Staunton to chip ahead. Conor Kelly contested for the ball, and as it dropped back under the Mary’s posts, Graham Coffey was on hand to dot down. Willie Staunton knocked over the conversion to leave it 16-6 to Nure.
Not wasting any time, he knocked over another penalty to make it 19-6, and followed that up with a monster penalty from somewhere along Cypress Grove Road to make it 22-6. This must have woken Mary’s up, as they immediately struck back, with their backs fashioning an overlap down the right for the winger to score, the conversion making it 22-13. It was backs to the wall stuff after that, with our defence holding strong phase after phase, before eventually Mary’s drove second row Ciaran Ruddock over in the corner. The tricky conversion was successful, and suddenly it was a two point game, with Mary’s looking for the win. Undeterred, Nure regained possession, and took it through the phases to earn a penalty 25 yards out on the left on 80 minutes. Staunton pushed it wide to the right, but as the Mary’s winger tried to control the dropping ball with his foot, his close control let him down, and he kicked the ball straight to his team mate standing five yards forward – offside! The ref gave a five yard penalty, and Staunton made no mistake – 25-20 in injury time.
Although Mary’s won the kick off, Nure turned it over and belted it out to take the spoils. A league final against UCD beckons on Friday the 15th November in Donnybrook (ko 19.30), and our undefeated start to the season continues. The wins didn’t stop there, as the 2nds defeated Mary’s 17-10 and the 4ths won 24-7. The 3rds and U20s were both defeated, 29-5 and 18-17 respectively, but the aggregate win goes to Terenure.

Terenure College RFC are delighted to announce that they are reuniting most of the legendary 1971 Lions this September 7th at a gala dinner event, which anyone with a love of the game can attend. This is the first reunion of it’s kind for a number of years and we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join with us in honouring this legendary 1971 Lions and our own Lion from that tour, Mick Hipwell. One of their members, Mick Hipwell, who played 12 times for Ireland was selected for the 1971 British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand. He played 6 times while on tour, and would have played more but for injury curtailing his pitch time. To this day the 1971 Lions remain the only squad to have won a test series in New Zealand. The squad contained legends of the game such as Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Gerald Davies, JPR Williams, Willie John McBride, Mike Gibson and many more from that wonderful era of international rugby. As this point 28 of the 1971 Lions (including those mentioned above) have confirmed they will be attending the reunion. For many who attend this could well be a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with some of the true legends of the game of rugby and surly a night that will never be forgotten. Originally billed as an event that would give the club a chance to honour one of its own in a luxury marquee at our club, so large has been the demand for tables they’ve recently moved the event to the Burlington, one of the few venues big enough. Thankfully, the new venue sees the release of additional tables for the event to cater for those looking to join the occasion, available to purchase either as a complete table for 10 or in pairs of tickets. This wonderful event includes a four course dinner (with some wine), a number of high profile guest speakers and live entertainment. Email 1971lions@tcrfc.ie for ticket information or go to “www.tcrfc.ie/1971lions” fill in the form and we’ll get back to you.
