It was another good weekend for the purple, black and white this weekend, with wins for the 4ths, 6ths and U20s.
On Saturday, the 2nd XV faced Clontarf for the second time in two weeks, with the Northsiders again proving too strong, running out 25-14 winners in Lakelands. The 6ths were given a walkover by Monkstown, while the 4th XV had undeniably the result of the weekend. Captain Ken Treacy and his team ran out 62-7 winners over Lansdowne in Ballycorus Road, with Gav Costello notching up FOUR tries in the second half.
The U20s followed up on last week’s win with a hard fought victory over Dublin University on Sunday. With College Park out of use, the match was played in Sydney Parade, with the lads running out 21-15 winners. The 3rds meanwhile, renewed their rivalry with Old Wesley in Lakelands. In a low scoring but gripping encounter, Terenure struck first to take a 7-0 lead. However, with a Nure man in the bin, Wesley struck back to leave the scores at 7-5 at half time. That’s the way it remained until the last kick of the game, when Wesley worked their way from their own 22, before slotting a neat drop goal to pinch the win 8-7. All in all, not a bad weekend, but plenty to work on for next week.
In other Nure news, Terenure man JP Doyle took charge of the whistle in Munster’s defeat away to Edinburgh, while Isaac Boss was instrumental in Leinster’s win away to the Ospreys. Meanwhile, our inaugural Ladies Tag League kicks off this week. With four teams competing over six weeks, it promises to be a great success.
Terenure College RFC launches their first ladies’ tag league this Monday night (15th), with four teams of ten taking part. The Terenure Tanlions, Angel Delights, Devil Wears Tags and MC Taggers will face off over the course of six weeks with two games taking place each week under floodlights. There is still room for more teams, with all welcome, from beginners to seasoned taggers. Individuals are welcome as well as other teams, and coaching will be available to all.
Ladies tag has grown over the last year in Terenure, with the Tanlions picking up two trophies over the summer. If you are interested in joining in, please contact Ian Morgan on 0863857561 or imorgan@labeltech.ie, or Elaine at terenuretag@gmail.com or 087 9356531.
Also on Saturday, the 4ths had a cracking win over a very strong Clontarf side in Lakelands. Helped in no small part by the sizeable frame of under 20 Ricky Slevin who lined out at prop, the lads put in a great performance to win 18-12. At the same time, the 6ths were victorious over the Emerald Warriors, while the 5ths were beaten in Killiney by a strong Seapoint side.
Sunday saw one of the biggest Sunday crowds in years, as the supporters took advantage of the good weather to watch as three Nure sides took on their Lansdowne counterparts. On the top pitch, the 3rds scored 6 tries to 1 in a big win, while the 2nds triumphed in a fiercely fought match thanks to a late Andy Wallace penalty. After a Terry Jones try had helped Nure to ten point lead, Lansdowne fought back and prolonged pressure eventually told, with a try close to the posts allwoing Lansdowne to draw level. Nure, and Wallace, had the last say to take the spoils by 3 points.
Arguably the performance of the weekend though, came on the 1st pitch, as the U20s put in a brilliant effort to beat Lansdowne. Two perfectly worked tries gave Nure a 14-0 lead early on, and as Lansdowne fought back in the second half, Nure defended like their lives depended on it, and hit back on the break to maintain their lead. Despite late Lansdowne pressure, the 20s held on for a well deserved win. Watch this space!

The 1st XV will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season as they travel to take on old foes Blackrock in Stradbrook on Saturday. After their superb six try win over UL Bohs last week, Nure are flying, but Rock are certain to pose a stiffer test. Rock had a good win away to Shannon last week, and this is sure to be a cracking derby game.
Also on Saturday, there are two games in Lakelands, with the 4th XV taking on Clontarf, and the 6th XV welcoming the Emerald Warriors, both at 3pm. Meanwhile, the 5th XV travel to Killiney to take on Seapoint, also on Saturday afternoon.
Sunday sees a triple header against the might of Lansdowne, as the 2nds, 3rds and U20s all play at home at 3pm. This is guaranteed to be a great day of rugby, and three close contests. The standard of rugby at these levels has been incredible over the last couple of seasons, and you won’t want to miss these matches.
Also, don’t forget that the Munster – Leinster match will be shown live in the club on Saturday evening (ko 18.45). The perfect way to round off a Saturday of rugby!
