This is why we do it.
Weekends like that are the reason why coaches are out in the rain and wind during the long winter months, watching as the players flog themselves up and down muddy pitches, pushing themselves in training and in matches to reach this stage of the season. They are the reason why the supporters stand shivering under the Lakelands trees week after week. Why so many people give so much of their free time to the club, getting nothing back but weekends like this one.
We went into the week with five games on the cards, three finals, a monster day of AIL rugby and a huge cup derby. We hoped against hope that each team would get what they deserved, but we all knew that in reality someone would lose out. Reality took a back seat though, as all five sides battled through to glory. The 1st XV were first up, knowing that they needed to beat DUFC to have any chance of overhauling Cork Con in the hunt for second place, and a coveted home semi final. On the day, Nure were too strong for the students, scoring eight tries and winning 50-12 in front of a bumper crowd in Lakelands. With Cork Con losing to Clontarf, Nure were rewarded with a home semi final spot against the Cork side. The game will take place in two weeks in Lakelands, on the weekend of the 28th/29th April.
