Fixtures this Weekend
The big weekends just keep on coming. Not only do the cup competitions continue in earnest, but there is also the small matter of a top of the table decider on Saturday, with the 1st XV knowing that a win will be enough to seal the Division 2A title. And what an occasion it promises to be, with 550 supporters sitting down for lunch in a marquee, the Club Choir making it’s debut and the visit of a top quality side in UCC. Lest we forget, UCC were in the running for promotion until their last game, where they were only narrowly beaten (17-14) by Corinthians. This shows the calibre of oppostion they pose, and with Corinthians sure to give it everything in Galway, the title will go down to the wire. Rumour has it that the IRFU have commissioned a helicopter to sit in Athlone with the winners’ plaque and two sets of ribbons, eagerly awaiting updates from Lakelands and Cloonaucauneen*.
As if you needed any further reason to come down to Lakelands on Saturday afternoon, our J4Bs and J5s are both in cup action that afternoon. In the Winters Cup 2nd Round, the J4bs take on NUIM Barnhall, and Daragh Whelan’s charges will be looking to continue their upward curve in what is sure to be a tough match. Since Christmas, the lads have been in great form, and this was in evidence last week in their win over an Eddie Halvey-led Coolmine side. The J5s gained revenge last Sunday for a league defeat to Monkstown in round one of the O’Connor Cup, and face Tallaght in round two.
Also on Saturday, the J4As travel to Lansdowne in a repeat of the league decider, which we won in dramatic circumstances. With barely a score separating the two sides all season, this is sure to be a cracker of a game. On Friday night, the league winning J3s head up to DLSP in the Moran Cup 2nd Round. Never an easy fixture, Kev Gallagher and his team will need your support as they continue their quest for a rare double. To finish the weekend off, what could be better than watching the U21s face up to the might of UCD? The venue has yet to be confirmed for this McCorry Cup semi final, so keep an eye on tcrfc.ie and leinsterrugby.ie.
All in all, a belter of a weekend ahead. All of our teams – players, coaches, managers, bag men etc – have put in huge amounts of work to get this far in their seasons, and they all need your support, so make sure to get out and cheer them on.
