Don’t let the miserable weather fool you, it is actually getting close to summer. And with the lengthening of the days comes the the end of the season, and the fixtures this week bear all of that growing importance. Five games, including three finals, a cup derby and a hugely important day for the 1st XV. Sunday sees three finals in a row – a Super Sunday if ever there was one.
The 1st XV kick off the action on Saturday afternoon in Lakelands, welcoming a Trinity side who are still savouring success in last week’s Colours game – a win that sees them guaranteed 1A rugby for next season. Nure head into the match neck and neck with Cork Con in the race for 2nd spot, and that coveted home semi final. Con hold the advantage by virtue of points difference, but have (arguably) the harder fixture, as they head to Castle Avenue to take on Tarf, who themselves are fighting hard for a playoff spot. The maths are simple – get more match points than Con and we have a home semi final. If we get the same amount of points, we will need to beat Trinity by 50 odd points more than Con score against Tarf. So basically, we need a ripper of a performance – aided by a crowd roaring the lads on.
Also on Saturday, the 5ths have their league final, away to Malahide. The northside club topped Division 10, and our lads gained their place in the playoff by beating the same side two weeks ago in the final league game. This will be an incredibly tough game, but Les Devlin and his team of merry men are more than a match for the challenge ahead. Good luck lads!
To Super Sunday then, and our big day of finals. Kicking off the action is the U17s, in the first of two D6w derbies on the day. They face Mary’s in Templeville in the Shield Final, kicking off at 12pm. They will be hoping that their triumvirate of Leinster U17 Development squad members will help propel them to glory – well done to Nathan Mullen, David Knocker and Aaron Meehan on their selection for this summer’s training camp!
At 3pm, the 2nds go to Donnybrook in the Metropolitan Cup final, where they face a DLSP side battle hardened from a season in the Leinster League. This will be a titanic clash, and the lads will need all the support they can get, so please make the effort to get over to ‘Energia Park’ and cheer them on.
Finally, the U20s face Mary’s in Lakelands in a replay, after drawing 24-24 last week in Templeville in the McCorry Cup. Kick off here is 17.30 – the perfect way to round off your weekend!
So come on, one last push – get your lungs warmed up and roar your bloody heart out!
