Our U20s retained the JP Fanagan yesterday with a resounding 39-5 win over Blackrock in Stradbrook. Needing only two points to clinch the league once again, they went above and beyond, putting in a first half display that left the home side reeling. Playing at a ferocious pace, they scored seven unanswered tries to lead 39-0 at half time.
An understandable drop in intensity and an admirable rally from the home side meant the second half remained scoreless until a minute from the end, when Rock got a well deserved try to break their duck. However, it wasn’t enough to prevent the JP Fanagan trophy from heading back to Lakelands.
This remarkable team now sit thirteen points ahead of Lansdowne with two games left, and nobody would bet against them making it a perfect 14 from 14. Winning the league is a huge achievement in itself, but the manner in which they have romped to victory (444 points in 12 games!) is simply incredible, and a huge testament to the coaching of Ian Morgan, John English and Peter O’Malley as well as the management team of Gerry Olin, Bren O’Connor and Donie O’Sullivan. This bunch of players are truly special, and will be the team to beat in the upcoming All Ireland Cup and the McCorry Cup.Well done to everyone involved!
