The 1st XV pulled off the greatest comeback in, well, yonks, on Saturday, coming from 26-7 down to beat UCD in Belfield. The home side roared into a 21 point lead in as many minutes in the first half, with a blistering start seeing the students score three converted tries as the 1sts looked mired in a post Christmas fog. Even a strong riposte that saw Sam Coghlan Murray pull one back was quickly doused, as UCD immediately scored one more to secure the bonus point before half time.

The change of ends coincided with a change in fortunes, as Nure scored 24 points unanswered in the second half. A penalty try got the ball rolling, before Coghlan Murray bagged a second. Wave upon wave of Nure pressure eventually crashed over the UCD line, with the forwards shoving over to allow James Thornton to kick us in front. With only minutes remaining, Nure were the more composed, and Thornton added a late penalty against his old side to leave the final score 31-26.

The bonus point win pushes us above Tarf into third spot, and will surely provide the perfect New Year springboard for a tilt at the playoffs. Make sure to check out the photos from the game, from Peter Thursfield and Philip Duke
