The Umbrella Under 17s & Under 15s Rugby Sevens Tournaments

J

Following the success of the 2012 tournament, the Umbrella Rugby 7s will return on Saturday 2ndMarch 2013 in Terenure College, Dublin. This year we plan to double the size of the tournament, inviting teams from all over Irela

nd and beyond to take part. We will also be hosting an under 15s (second years) tournament alongside the main under 17s (fourth years) competition.

The video below tells you everything you need to know about the competition and where all the proceeds go.

To register your school’s interest in taking part please fill in this form and we will provide you with more details of the tournament. Places are limited so get in touch with us early to avoid disappointment.

Last year’s tournament saw Newbridge College fend off tough competition from Cistercian College Roscrea to be crowned as the overall cup winners, with Blackrock College taking home the plate and Terenure College the shield. Click here to see some photos of the day.  No doubt competition will again be fierce to see who will be crowned the 2013 Umbrella 7s Cup winners! In addition to this the Umbrella 7s recently staged two successful tournaments in Toronto Canada.

Like last year this competition is slightly differ

ent to others, as not only will the participants enjoy finishing off their season by playing one of the most exciting brands of rugby and enhancing all the skills used in the 15-a-side game, but it will also help orphaned and trafficked children in Nepal, one of the world’s poorest countries.

In the last number of years 7s rugby has taken off as an international sport, so much so that in 2016, 7s rugby will be in the Olympics. Ireland is currently the only major rugby playing nation that does not have a professional 7s team, and without an organised 7s competition at schools level, the gap is set to grow.

Apart from the rugby aspect, the Umbrella 7s will be supporting the work of The Umbrella Foundation, an Irish charity which has been working with destitute children in Nepal since 2005. With this competition, we foresee Irish youths helping to raise vital funds and awareness for children who, but for Umbrella, would be living in unbearable conditions.
